English and Literacy Standards

In the area of the literacy, students will experience three significant shifts in order to help them be college- or career-ready by the end of high school.

Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction. Reading content-rich nonfiction is crucial for developing a student’s strong general knowledge and vocabulary. Nonfiction plays an important role in building knowledge grounded in information about the world around them.

Reading and writing grounded in evidence. Rather than just read or write about prior experience or knowledge, students will be asked to read and write for deeper understanding by responding in narrative form. For example, students may be asked to defend a position or develop a sequence of commands based on evidence.

Complex texts and academic language. Students will need to be able to comprehend more complex texts and understand vocabulary that relates to the complexity of the reading. This is to be accomplished through regularly guided and supported practice.
